Local Celiac Discovers Soup They’ve Been Simmering For 30 Minutes May Contain Gluten
While prepping a large pot of chicken soup to freeze during the current pandemic, celiac Tristan Willis discovered the chicken broth they had thought was safe may, in fact, contain gluten. Their local grocery store offered the broth as a replacement to the usual gluten free broth, which was sold out.
“Thank god I even thought to check,” Willis said. “Halfway through cooking the soup I had a sudden whim and scanned the barcode in my gluten free scanner app.”
The app and Willis’ further searching through online celiac forums proved inconclusive, all saying this particular broth “may contain gluten.” Willis let the soup keep simmering, but otherwise completely fell apart on their kitchen floor, expelling emotions that have been building since their first day of self-isolation a week and a half ago.
“Like what the hell does that even mean, anyway?,” Willis continued. “I mean, I know what it means but god! How could there ‘possibly’ be gluten in chicken broth? What did you DO to it?”
When asked about trying the soup anyway, Willis explained taking a chance could prove extremely painful and unhealthy, but most of the details were difficult to make out through blubbering and tearful hiccups.
Willis’ partner had one serving for dinner that night. The rest was frozen for later.
“The whole situation was a mess,” Willis’ partner, Pete Volk, said. “But I still got delicious chicken soup out of it, so it’s hard not to come away from the experience with some positivity.”
Willis had incredibly unsatisfying gluten free ramen, which is not at all like chicken soup.
